that has not responded to treatment with oral antibiotics.

Uses of Isotretinoin
Isotretinoin, Isotroin belongs to a group of medicines known as retinoids, which are
derivatives of vitamin A. It works by reducing the production of the skins natural oil
(sebum). Acne occurs due to excessive production of sebum from over-active sebaceous
glands in the skin. The sebum blocks the sebaceous glands, which prevents the oil from
flowing freely out and causes an accumulation of sebum under the skin. The bacteria
associated with acne thrive in these conditions. They feed on the sebum, and produce
waste products and fatty acids that irritate the sebaceous glands, making them inflamed
and causing spots. Isotretinoin decreases the size and activity of the sebaceous glands
in the skin, which reduces the amount of sebum that is produced. This stops the glands
becoming blocked and the resulting acne is reduced or stopped.

Serious Side effects of Accutane, Roaccutan, Isotret (Isotretinoin)
Common side effects of isotretinoin are Joint aches, dry skin, itching, dry nose, nosebleeds,
cracks in the corners of the mouth), dry mouth, and inflammation of the whites of the eyes.
Rare side effects include skin infections, peeling, sun sensitivity, hearing impairment and
hepatitis. Psychiatric problems such as depression, hallucinations and suicidal behavior
have also been reported.
More rarely, isotretinoin can cause brain swelling (pseudotumor cerebri or intracranial
hypertension), which causes nausea, vomiting, headache, and changes in vision.

Special Precautions When Using Isotretinoin
Isotretinoin can cause birth defects and premature births. Isotretinoin is harmful to the
fetus and therefore should not be used during pregnancy. Therefore women of childbearing
age must have two negative pregnancy test results before using Isotretinoin. Pregnancy
tests should then be conducted each month while using Isotretinoin. Pregnancy should be
avoided until at least one month after stopping isotretinoin.
