Uses of Zolpidem (Ambien, Stilnox)
Zolpidem is a sedative-hypnotic used for the short term (1 to 2 weeks) treatment of
insomnia (trouble sleeping). It works quickly (usually within 15 minutes) and helps the user
sleep longer. Zolpidem acts on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a
calming effect. It works by enhancing the effects of the natural chemical GABA
(gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the body
How to take Zolpidem
Take this medication by mouth immediately before bedtime on an empty stomach or as
directed. This medication is usually taken for short periods of 7 to 14 days and no longer
than 6 weeks. Do not take a dose of this drug unless you have time for a full night's sleep
that lasts at least 7-8 hours. Do not increase the dose or take for longer than prescribed.
Side effects of Zolpidem (Ambien, Stilnox)
Daytime drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea,
lightheadedness, and dry mouth may occur. If any of these effects continue or become
bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop any of these serious side
effects while taking this medication: chest pain, rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, skin
rash, fever, behavior changes, mental confusion, abnormal thinking, depression.
Avoid alcohol which will aggravate these effects.
Zolpidem can infrequently cause memory loss. To avoid this effect, do not take a dose of
this drug unless you have time for a full night's sleep that lasts at least 7-8 hours
Precautions When Taking Zolpidem (Ambien, Stilnox)
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of kidney disease, liver disease, lung
disease, drug dependency, depression, breathing problems, and allergies. Zolpidem should
not be used during pregnancy unless clearly needed, since small amounts of zolpidem
are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Elderly persons are usually more sensitive to the effects of this medication so use with
caution. Some may experience sleeping difficulties on the first night after stopping this
medication. If the problem continues, contact your doctor.
Recreational use and Abuse of Ambien, Zolpidem
Zolpidem can become addictive if taken for extended periods of time, due to the user
depending on it to sleep or to the euphoria it can sometimes produce.
As is the case with many prescription hypnotic drugs, zolpidem is sometimes used by
stimulant users to "come down" after the use of stimulants such as methamphetamine,
cocaine, MDMA (ecstasy), or amphetamines.
Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including:
any medication for depression or seizures, narcotic pain relievers, sedatives.
Avoid the use of alcohol while taking this medication.
Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Overdose of Zolpidem
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room
immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include difficulty breathing, clumsiness, slowed
heart rate, and deep sleep from which you cannot be awakened.
Storage of Zolpidem
Store at room temperature between 59o and 86o F (between 15o and 30o C)
