Common uses of Fioricet (butalbital + acetaminophen + caffeine)
Brand Fioricet (made by Novartis for Watson Pharma) is a combination of acetaminophen
APAP (325 mg) and the barbiturate sedative: butalbital (50 mg) and caffeine (40 mg).
It is used to treat tension headaches and migraine headaches, it is also used for other
types of pain, such as shoulder and back pain. Acetaminophen reduces pain and fever.
Caffeine constricts dilated blood vessels that may contribute to tension headaches.

Cautions and abuse of Fioricet
The acetaminophen contained in Fioricet has been shown to cause liver damage at higher
dosages. The butalbital contained in Fioricet is an addictive, behavior altering barbiturate.
Fioricet can be habit forming. Fioricet should not be mixed with alcohol as it adds to the
effects of alcohol causing increased intoxication and drowsiness, drinking large amounts of
alcohol regularly while taking this medicine may also increase the chance of liver damage.

Fioricet contains acetaminophen, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking other
medications containing acetaminophen which is commonly found in OTC (non prescription)
pain relievers and cough-and-cold products. Read the labels of over the counter products
and do not exceed 4000 mg of acetaminophen per day.

lack of feeling alert, slow or shallow breathing, cold or clammy skin, loss of consciousness,
dark urine, stomach pain, extreme fatigue, confusion, irregular heartbeat and coma.
